China exported 11.39 mln tons of steel products in the first quarter of 2008, down 19.3 pct year-on-year, while imports fell 2.1 pct to 4.18 mln tons, the General Administration of China Customs said.

In March, China exported 4.16 mln tons of steel products, while imports stood at 1.51 mln tons. No comparative figure for imports was given.

Imports of steel billet in the first quarter fell 37.9 pct year-on-year to 50,000 tons, with March imports at 20,000 tons, while exports of steel billet in the first three months fell 95 pct to 90,000 tons, with 10,000 tons exported in March.

China also imported 110.66 mln tons of iron ore in the first quarter, up 10.5 pct year-on-year. It imported 35.68 mln tons of iron ore last month. No comparative figures were given.
